The word doxology generally
means a short verse praising God and usually beginning with the Greek
word Doxa. (Gloria) This piece is a lesser or minor doxology because it
is based on
the Gloria Patri. It would be a greater or major doxology if it were
based on the Gloria in Excelsis Deo.
The practice of ending a rite or a hymn with such a formula comes from
the Synagogue. Christians commonly add a lesser doxology to the singing
of the Psalms.
Other versions of the lesser doxology can be seen on this web site
in “Every
Tribe And
Tongue".
They are at the end of: “Come
Sing Unto The Lord,” (Psalm 100) “Blessed is The
Kingdom of The Father,” (From the Divine Liturgy of St John
Chrysostom.) “The
Lord is my Shepherd,” (Psalm 23) “My Redeemer,”
(which contains rhe Kyrie Eleison,and
the Gloria Patri)
and
“Lord Now Lettest
Thou Thy Servant,” (The Nunc Dimittis.)
and "Praise
God From Whom All Blessings Flow” (Words by Thomas Ken in 1674)
This was written to be sung either a cappella in the Orthodox manner,
or with Harp because this may be used seperatly, or to follow
Psalms that have
a Harp or Guitar part. Since a Harp
may be hard to come by, I included the chord names for a Guitarist
who
will undoubtably construct the chords and play it quite differently,
but
"Harplike," I
hope, and at a lower volume so the words can be understood.
This has not been sung, so instruments
are used for voices. MIDI String Ensemble 1 for SATB. If you use it, please send me a
recording that I may use on this site, and for seeking publication.
~ Lyrics ~
Freely adapted from the Gloria Patri by Thomas Byron Parks
We sing
our praises to God the Father,
and to His Son and to His Holy Spirit.
Three Persons of the One,
who made the Earth, the Moon, and Sun.
It is now as it was there in the beginning,
and unto ages of ages shall it be,
World without end.
Amen. Amen. Amen.

The
Lesser Doxology is based on the Gloria
Patri which, in Latin, is:
Gloria
Patri, et Filio, et Spiritui Sancto. Sicut
erat in principio, et nunc, et semper, et in
sæcula sæculorum. Amen.
is
literally translated:
Glory
be to the Father, and
to the Son, and to
the Holy Ghost. As it
was in the beginning, is now,
and always, to the ages of ages. Amen.
