Requiem is Latin for rest. A Requiem Mass is a Catholic funeral service. The music is known as a Requiem. Originally sung as Gregorian Chant, the major parts of the liturgy were later done as choral & orchestral pieces in concert.

More than 2000 composers have been drawn to write Requiems by the deep feelings that surround death. Here is my take on it. I wrote new lyrics for the Introit anf for the Pia Jesu. The rest are from the Requiem Mass as shown in Wikipedia. Half have accoumpanyment, although I highly favor a cappella choral music...partly because it's easier to understand the words.

1.    Introit        Entrance        (Words by, Thomas Parks)

O come, ye brokenhearted ones,
Who gather here to bid a last farewell,
To one, who leaves us and the world we know,
In passage through the awe-filled gates of death.

We mourn our loss, but know that all must go,
Before our God, who in His steadfast love,
Will welcome our departing one,
As one of His own, who has, at last…
Come home..

  2.    Kyrie Eleison        Lord Have Mercy

Kyrie eleison. Christe eleison, Kyrie eleison.
Lord have mercy on us. Christ have mercy on us. Lord have mercy on us.
Kyrie eleison. Christe eleison, Kyrie eleison.
(
3.    Offertory        Offering   (Freely adapted by Thomas Byron Parks)
Lord Jesus Christ, King of glory,
free the souls of the departed
from infernal punishment and the deep pit.
Free them from the lion’s mouth, and fron the darkness.

May Saint Michael lead them into the holy light
O Lord, we offer you prayeers and songs for praise.
Accept them on behalf of the souls we remember today.

Make them pass over from death to life,
as you promised to Abraham and his seed.

4.    Sanctus        Holy, Holy, Holy

Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus
Dominus Deus Sabaoth.
Pleni sunt caeli et terra gloria tua.
Hosanna in excelsis. Hosanna in excelsis.
Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini.
Hosanna in excelsis, Hosanna in excelsis.
Hosanna in excelsis, in excelcis Deo.

5.        Pia Jesu        Sweet Jesus
(From “Sweet Jesus Take my Hand”,
A Modern Psalm by Thomas Byron Parks)

People may seek or save my life.
but Jesus comes to save my soul,
That shines so brightly in the night,
Reflecting God’s eternal light.

O Heavenly Father Jesus send,
His helping hand for me to lend,
So when to call me You decide,
I’ll with the Saints and You reside.

Sweet Jesus take my hand.
I have no strength of my own.
Come Lord, my shepherd be,
And I will rest in Thee.

6..        Agnus Dei      Lamb of God

O Lamb of God, who taketh away the sin of the world,
have mercy upon them, and grant them rest.

O Lamb of God, who taketh away the sin of the world,
have mercy upon them, and grant them rest.

O Lamb of God, who taketh away the sin of the world,
have mercy upon them, and grant eternal rest.

7.        Libera Me
Deliver me

Deliver me, O Lord, from death eternal on that fearful day,

when the heavens and the earth shall be moved,
when thou shalt come to judge the world by fire.

I am made to tremble, and I fear, till the judgment be upon us,
and the coming wrath,

when the heavens and the earth shall be moved.

That day, day of wrath, calamity, and misery,
day of great and exceeding bitterness,

when thou shalt come to judge the world by fire.

Rest eternal grant unto them, O Lord:

and let light perpetual shine upon them.

8.        In Pparadisum      I
nto paradise

May angels lead you into paradise;
May the martyrs receive you at your coming
and lead you to the holy city of Jerusalem.

May a choir of angels receive you
and with Lazarus, who once was poor,
may you have eternal rest.
